'Toad' is the GW telegraph code for a brake van, and the standard Great Western Railway brake van design dates from 1894. Many varieties were built between 1894 and the early 1950s, each with the open veranda at one end and the guards compartment at the other.
Toad arrived in "Enterprising Engines", but starred in "Oliver the Western Engine" (1969).
